Part 1
WEB SITE CONTENT
The first factor we will go over is Web content, which is maybe the most important of the three factors to get your web site ranked on the search engines. MSN is big on content; you can have very few links and traffic to your web site, but have great content and get ranked on the first page of MSN. Yahoo and Google will look to your traffic and links a little more then MSN, but it will be important to have good content to get ranked with them as well. Let us get you started on making some changes on your web site that will make it more search-engine friendly.

Most of the Web sites from around 2000 and newer are using what is called the cPanel. Because this is one of the more common editors, we will show you how to access the neccesary files to be edited in cPanel. If you are using editing programs such as Joomla or Dreamweaver, then you will need to insert the codes in your home page or the pages you want to submit to the search engines. Here are the steps for doing this:

Step 1
Accessing cPanel Files
To get to your cPanel files is simple just type in your Internet browser, just type your complete Web site address followed by /cpanel. Here is an example:

After you have accessed your cPanel, you will see the following screen:

Click on the "File Manager" as we show you in the red box.

That will bring you to this screen:
Look for the file labeled "WWW;" if you cannot locate it use the "PUBLIC" file.

You will then be at this screen:
Locate the file that displays your home page. It is usually the "INDEX" file, or the page you want to get optimized.

Click on the page-to-be-optimized file, then select the "Edit File" option. The screen will look like the following:

At the top of the page, you will see the HTML codes. This is where you will place your new title, followed by your meta tags. If you are using an editing program such as Joomla or Dreaweaver, you will need to manually type the code as shown above, starting with the <Head>

Step 2
Adding the Web Site Title

If you are using a cPanel program you will need to locate your home-page or the page you want to optimize file in the Web site editor program like we have shown you above. Once you locate the page to be optimized, click on the EDIT FILE. At the top of your page you will see a similar html code:

<title></title>

Here is where you will choose your Web-site title. The important thing to do here is to get up to three popular search terms pertaining to your Web site's content. You can choose one strong keyword if you prefer, but no more then three.

Here is an alternative method that works great as well. Start with your keyword title by going to this link:

You will type in a word that pertains to your web site content. For our example we are going to use an Internet Dating web site.

We type the broad term "DATING" and click on "Suggest."

The following popular search terms would be displayed:

In the "search keywords" you will see the keywords displayed in the order of search volume. It is important to choose GOOD search terms that will best fit your Web site's content. You do not neccessarily have to choose the highest volume keywords, for they will take longer to get ranked on the top pages.

OPTION #1
For our example we will use the three keywords that we have placed in red boxes in the picture above. Once you have selected your keyword search term OR search terms, you will enter them to the HTML as follows:

<title>Dating Web Site | Internet Dating | Online Dating</title>

Notice the verticle dividers and spacings we placed between each keyword.

OPTION #2
Instead of adding multiple keywords into the title as we have shown you above, you have the option to create separate keyword pages. What you do is create a new Web page. This is easy to do if you are using a cPanel; click on "CREATE NEW FILE" under the same directory as your home page is located. You will then copy your home page, or the page you want to get indexed and ranked. Rename the new page with the keywords you would like.

Let us use our dating Web site as an example. You would name separate pages for each of the keyword search terms as follows:

Your main Web site address followed by/SearchTermYouChoose

You will then only need to add the ONE keyword into the <title> tag for each page you create.

Important
If you decide to do this option of separating each page with keywords, you will need to do the remaining part of this program for each page you create.

What is more effective?
Option #2 is more effective for getting ranked quicker. However, it will be a little more work than just adding multiple keywords to one Web page, unless, your Web site URL address happens to be the keyword you are wanting to get optimized. For example, we would not create a separate keyword page for our Web site if we wanted to get optimized under the keyword "More Web site traffic" because our Web site is More-Web-Site-Traffic.com I think you get the idea. The additional benefit of creating separate keyword pages is that you can create several pages using different keywords in both the URL address and the title.

Creating a New Web Site Tip
This is an important tip to remember if you are creating a new Web site. Try to get a domain name with the keyword in the domain.

Step 3
Adding Meta Tags
Directly below the title in your HTML, you will add Meta Tags to your Web site. We have some pre-set meta tags for your use. Just copy and paste the entire code into the Web site, directly below the <title> tag you edited in step 2. You will then edit the red part of the code we have provided to match your Web site's content.

COPY THE COMPLETE CODE BELOW

<meta name="description" content="Internet dating for the 21st century, find your partner today"/>
<meta name="keywords" content="internet dating, dating web site, online dating, web dating, dating service online, dating on the internet"/>
<meta name="classification" content="Relationships and Dating"/>
<meta name="abstract" content="dating web site,Internet dating,Online dating"/>
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow"/>
<meta name="distribution" content="GLOBAL"/>
<meta name="language" content="en-us"/>
<meta name="revisit-after" content="5 days"/>

The code above is to be edited to match your Web site's content Edit the RED only.

Edit Description: You will write a brief description of the services or products you are selling on your Web site.

Edit Keywords: Start with the three keywords in your title; then you can add more keywords by using the SEO keyword tool we showed you in "adding title" in step 1. We suggest you limit the number of keywords to bewteen 10-15 maximum.

Edit Classification: Here you will try to guess the directory your Web site would best fit.

Edit Abstract: This will be the same as your title keywords.

If you would like to create additional meta tags, you can do so with our special meta generator tool. Click on the link below to use our Meta Tag generator.

After you have edited your title and have added meta tags, click "Save" and you are done.

Remember
You will need to add the meta tags to each of your pages if you decide to create separate keyword pages.

Step 4
Renaming Pictures
Many Web sites will have pictures. Little do many Webmasters know that these pictures can help index their Web sites if they are properly named. What you will do is go to your Web site and click on all the photos on your page. Save each of these pictures to a special folder so you can easily access them. After you have downloaded all these pictures into a special folder, you will then rename each of the pictures. This is how you do that:

1st: Right click your picture and click "Rename."

2nd: Rename all of your pictures the same as the keyword you used in your title. For example, if you used multiple keywords as in Option #1, then you would want to rename your pictures something like this: e.g. Dating Web site 1, Dating Web site 2, Internet Dating 1, Internet Dating 2, etc.

If you are setting up separate keyword pages such as discussed in option #2, then you would rename the pictures: Dating Web site 1, Dating Web site 2, Dating Website 3,Dating Website 4, etc.

3rd: After you have renamed your pictures to match the keywords, go to your Web-site-editor's home page file. Click on each of the pictures and upload the newly renamed pictures back to their original spots, overriding existing picture.

You will need to do this for your all the pictures, as well as picture buttons, logos, etc.

Creating a New Web Site Tip
This is a simple process if you are building a Web site from scratch just name your pictures to match your keywords before uploading onto the page.

Step 5
Home Page Textual Content
You will need to add the keywords you used in your <title> on your page. You will want to rewrite certain parts of your home page to include these keywords. The search engines will want to see some of these keywords in your Web site's content.

Header
Your header will be at the very top of the text on your page. You will want to use the title keyword as the opening on your site. To use our Dating Web site as an example, and if our page title keyword was "Internet Dating," we would place that at the very top of the page in large bold letters like this:
Internet Dating

If we only are using one page with the three title keywords, then you can do something like this as your header:
Dating Web site
Internet Dating - Online Dating

You do not need to use all three keywords in your header if it does not look right.

Links and Text Buttons
If you are using text links on your home page, you should also rename them to match your title keyword.

As an example if you use a button labeled "HOME PAGE," you can rename that button as the keyword, such as:
Internet Dating - Home Page
or just
Internet Dating

For your "CONTACT" text link button you could rename it "Contact Internet Dating" or "E-Mail Internet Dating."

If you have a Link page to external links, don't just name them "LINKS," rename them: "Internet Dating Links."

Again, as long as it does not effect the Web site's appeal and function.

Adding Keywords into Text
This will be another important step to make your Web site search-engine friendly. Many SEO programs will tell you to just add the keywords into your Web site as many times as you can with no limits. WRONG! For one, this can make a Web site look real bad when the keywords are out of place and don't fit into a sentence or paragraph. The most important reason is, if you have the keyword(s) in your Web site too many times, the search engines will actually give you lower rankings. You will want to rewrite portions of your Web site to use your title keyword. Try to place it throughout the Web site where and whenever possible, as long as it makes sense and doesn't affect the Web site's effect. You will also want to place the keywords in bold letters, if possible. After you have added the keywords into your page, then use the tool we are going to show you here:

Enter your Web-site address and the title keyword, then press "Analyze."

You will then see the following stats displayed:

Many different stats will be displayed. However, the ONLY stat you will need to be concerned with is the "ALL TEXT" stat %. The ideal range for this percentage is between 2% - 5%; you see our site at 2.54%. If you are at just below 2% you are ok, try not to go too much above 5%; DO NOT go above 7% - that will be a problem. A simple solution if you are too high is to add some more text.

Your HTML Content Size Matters
You will also have to limit your site content size to 50 KB or less of HTML. This is easy to check: go to the Web site address you are working on, then in the menu tabs click on: "VIEW" ------>"SOURCE" and a separate notepad box will appear. You will "Select All" then Copy and paste that complete HTML code into a sperate note pad. Save the note pad to your desktop. You then right click and select "Properties." You will see the size of the HTML located on that page. If you are at 50 KB or less, you are good. Search engines will only scan the first 70 KB of your HTML. If you are under 70 KB you should still be okay. However, we find that between 20 KB and 50 KB is perfect.

Updating Content
It will be important to update and change the content on your home page at least once every month. You do not need to change the whole home page on every update. You can re-word certain parts of the home page, and add or remove some pictures, etc. The search engines like fresh content, and this is the best way to keep them thinking you are constantly updating.

Step 6
Adding Article Pages
You will want to add articles to your Web site to create some additional content. There are two ways to do this. The first is to add an RSS Feed directly to a new Web page you create. This will allow current updated content to be pumped into your site. The second way is our way: create new pages on your Web site just as if you were creating new pages for option #2, creating separate title keyword pages complete with the keyword as the <title>. For each separate page you create you will copy and paste articles from the Internet. There are thousands of article directory companies where you can find millions of articles to post to your pages. Here are a few we suggest you use:

You will do a search for the same words as your keyword title; a list of thousands of articles will be displayed. Choose any of the articles you would like, then copy and paste the complete articles, including any links into the new page. Save this page and create a new one, and so on, and so on. Be sure to give the copyright credit for the articles you use.

We suggest trying to create about 30-50 pages for your Web site; you can change these every month or two by continually getting fresh articles.

If you have Google AdSense, you can post that on your article's pages to generate income from these pages. If you do not have Google AdSense, you can get a free account by clicking the button below.

You will want to make one final page for your article directory. You will place links to each article you created on this page. You then will place a link on your home page linking to that article directory. This will show that your Web site is filled with pages of relevant content, which the search engines love. Take a look at one of our members Web sites that shows how to do this click on the "ARTICLES" button at top of page.

You can add RSS feed along with creating these article pages if you choose.

This is optional and some members have chosen not to do this Step 6, because it does take a little bit of time to do. But it can be very rewarding in the long run.

These five steps can make the difference between your Web site being indexed on page 1,525 or on the first 10 pages of the search engines. These are very easy steps to do. You will not need to be a Webmaster to do these simple steps.

Step 6
Site Maps
Site maps are designed for easy navigation for the visitor in your Web site, as well as for linking your pages together on one page. This is easy to do by creating a new page labeled "Site Map." On this page you will link all the pages of your Web site (except the Member's Page, if applicable) to this one page. You then will link this site map to your home page or the page(s) you are optimizing. All that will be needed to accomplish this is placing a very small text link at the very bottom of your Web page.

The final procedure is to make sure all your links are working. Search engines do not like broken links on your Web site. We have an easy tool to use to check this quickly. You type in your Web site address, check off "Summary Only" and then click "Check." Here is the link:

You are done with Part 1; it is now time to submit your Web site to the search engines.
